Hello all, I hope you all are planning on having a great Memorial Day weekend.
As for me, nothing planned. I’ll probably just stay home and continue working on
some small projects that have consumed some of my free time lately. Just as a warning, this post is really mundane... and isn't as fun to read as posts from months past. Partially because I don't really have anything fun to talk about. If you want a more interesting read click back 3 or 4 posts... or if you've already read those... you can continue if you wish.
As you may remember, from my May 4th 2009 post, I made a commitment to myself to
“do” and “not do” certain things for 30 days. Without re-explaining the entire
commitment in this post, I’ll just give a synopsis. Basically no bar runs, no
fast food, no running into ex boyfriends, no spending of money on superfluous
items, and to concentrate on finding a new career path while continuing to serve
my existing clients to the best of my ability. Well, today is the 25th day of
that 30 day commitment and I’m doing quite well. I’ve not had any fast food, have not run into any ex boyfriends, and have made some strides on
improving my career portfolio and seeking additional business opportunities. So,
so far so good.
I will say, however, that the last 25 days has been a fair bit lonely for me. I
haven’t been “going out” with friends on the weekends or made many social plans
of any kind. When I go outside, with the exception of going to visit clients, I
almost feel agoraphobic, ha. My only link to the outside world has been business
related, a phone call from a friend here or there, and random email strings with
a friend regarding current politics or world events. Since I don’t really
subscribe to any online “social” forums I really haven’t had the opportunity to
hangout with many people recently.
The odd thing is that I know several friends that would love to hangout with me,
and we could do so at any time if I gave them the signal, but I just haven’t
really had much desire to hangout with them this month. Maybe it’s specific to
those people, or maybe in some way I’m actually enjoying the time alone this 30
day commitment has brought me. Whatever the reason I have been really productive
in the last 30 days. Client projects are going great, albeit work overall is
slow, and I’ve finished a few personal projects that have been laying around for
me to finish.
One project I took the time to setup recently was an online forum for IT
Professionals in the LGBT community to correspond with each other and discuss
workplace issues, share resumes, review LGBT career resources, and post
technical questions in a variety of categories. This was a re-design of a fairly popular forum a few years ago called Queer Sacramento - Technical. So far there are only about 7
members of the forum, but the QS-Technical group have yet to join. (Hey, it’s only been up
for about 7 days!) The site is not setup to foster person 2 person
communication, but rather group communication, so it’s certainly not one of
those “gay centric” websites that I’ve commonly bashed in previous post. If you
care to visit, are an LGBT IT Technologist or computer enthusiast, feel free to
join and post anything you’d like. The web address:
www.LGBTTech.com
, oh… and if you’re wondering, yes I did also create
www.GLBTTech.com
but they both point to the same content.
Nothing much to report on the job hunting, there just isn’t much out there right
now. I did update my resume though. It still isn’t great, but I’ll keep working
at it. My “resume packet” which contains a non-job-specific cover letter and
references is now posted in the Profession section of this site.
My friend Rob is leaving for a three week vacation tomorrow. He’s going to
Penang Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, and Singapore. I’m sooo jealous, even
more jealous because he gets to enjoy these locations with the company of
someone he loves dearly. For the time being I’ll just vicariously live my life
through him. :-/
Oh, since my last posting it was Mother’s Day. I sure hope you got your mother
something nice! Well, my mother passed away many years so I brought her flowers
at her resting place. My brother is not local to her, but we communicate every
time one of us gets a chance to visit her. Three days after mother’s day it was
my mom’s actual birthday, five days after that it was my brother’s birthday.
Geez, I’m glad mine is in July!
This is an uncharacteristically short “MyThoughts” post, sorry, I just don’t’
have much to share. My life has been basically work, personal projects and sleep
for the last month. Hopefully I’ll have something exciting to report next time I
write a post.
